Chapter 6

It was fairly miraculous they’d both managed to make it through the reception.

When Poll had decided to go through with marrying Junie—even knowing how angry she’d be—he’d invited his parents to the wedding, along with the rest of his close family. Well, actually, he hadn’t wanted to, because he wasn’t certain how Junie would react, but Jax had talked him into it, pointing out if he actually went through with it, his parents and siblings would want to be there. Especially his parents. So they were, and he was glad.

But his family weren’t the only ones who seemed confused by Junie’s glowers.

“What in the heck did you do to my sister?” Bob growled from behind him.

Poll whirled around from where he’d been watching his parents chat with Bert and Beth Cauldron, and offered Bob a weak smile. “What?”

“I said,” Bob repeated in a threatening tone as he stepped up beside Poll, “what did you do to my sister?”

“Oh.” Poll shrugged, then told the truth. “I married her.”

“And that’s why she’s standing there, next to the cake, glaring daggers at you?”

Poll hummed. “She’s good at that, huh?”

“This is your wedding, you idiot. You should be standing beside her, looking deliriously happy together.”

“Can I ask you something, Bob? Have you ever seen Junie look deliriously happy about anything?”

Bob blinked. “Well…she’s not the type to get delirious, I guess.”

“Right. She’s cool and collected and always in command. She sticks to the plan.”

His new brother-in-law frowned at him thoughtfully. “You know her pretty well.”

“I married her, didn’t I?”

“But why does she look so angry?”

Poll shrugged and jammed his hands into his pockets. “Because it didn’t quite go according to her plan, I guess.”

Even though Poll made it sound as though he really had no idea, he knew. Oh yeah, he knew.

The other man crossed his arms in front of his chest and hummed quietly, obviously considering something. Finally, he shrugged. “Do you love her, Apollo?”

So much for hoping not to be teased about my stupid name.

“I’ve liked her for a long time, since we were both in high school, as a matter of fact. I’ve admired her since we started to work together. When she asked me to marry her, I said yes.”

There. Every word of that was true.

But from Bob’s incredulous stare, he seemed surprised. “She asked you?”

Poll shrugged. “See what I mean about her being in control? I’m happy to let her have the reins, but she has to learn that, sometimes, someone else gets to choose the path.”

“That metaphor’s almost as bad as one of my mom’s,” Bob growled, but then he sighed. “Look, man, all of my sisters are special, alright? But Junie’s been on her own for longer. I probably can’t do the ‘protective-big-brother gig’ with her, because she doesn’t really need me. But…if you hurt her, I’ll kick your butt.”

“Noted.” Poll immediately nodded. “And if you do anything to sabotage my marriage”—such as letting Junie think she can run back home before we’ve even tried to work things out—“I’ll kick your butt.
